Overview on Menopause 

1. ↓ Reproductive hormones
2. Diagnosed after 12 months of amenorrhea and marks the end of the reproductive period
3. Average around 50 years old

Nursing Assessment for Menopause 

1. Symptoms
     a. Can start up to 6 years before the final period, and continues for a variable number of years after
    b. Wide range of symptoms
             i. Hot flashes (most common)
            ii. Insomnia
           iii. Weight gain, bloating
           iv. Mood changes, depression
            v. Breast pain, headaches
           vi. Osteoporosis
           vii. Reproductive, urinary changes
                        1. Irregular menses
                        2. Vaginal dryness, painful intercourse
                        3. Prolapse of reproductive and urinary structures
2. Lab testing seen with endocrine changes
               i. ↑ FSH→ Indicates that menopause has occurred
              ii. ↓ Estrogen and inhibin



 

Therapeutic Management for Menopause 

1. Hormone replacement therapy for severe cases
2. Symptom management

Patient Profile:

Name: Jana Adams 
Age: 52 years old 
Gender: Female 
Medical History: none reported 


Presenting Symptoms:
  • Irregular menstrual cycles 
  • Hot flashes and night sweats 
  • Mood swings and irritability 
  • Vaginal dryness 
Medical Examination and Diagnostics:
  • Physical Examination: Mrs. Adams displayed signs of menopause, including vaginal atrophy and thinning of the vaginal walls.
  • Hormone Levels: Confirmed hormonal changes consistent with menopause, including decreased estrogen levels


 

Medical History:
Mrs. Adams had no significant medical history, but her symptoms indicated the onset of menopause


Diagnosis: 
Mrs. Adams was diagnosed with menopause, the natural cessation of menstruation and reproductive functions 

Treatment Plan:
